The above five maps show the the first census of the Republic of Turkey on  1927. The above five maps include the census of literacy, population density, adult distribution, taxation and widowhood distribution .

This census is taking place 4 years after the establishment of the Republic of Turkey, and is implemented under the demand of the first President at that time Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. During the 15 years time of Ataturk as the President of the Republic of Turkey, he undergoes a series of reform to modernize the country. The first census was undergone indicates its need to collect the most updated data of the country in order to solve the most emergent issues. For example, in the literacy census it shows that most part of the country has a low population density of people who know how to read and write. It shows that there is a necessity in improving the education. Therefore, Ataturk initiated the language reform , in which the Ottoman Turkish alphabet was replaced by the new Turkish alphabet derived from the Latin alphabet, so that the people will be easier to learn the language.

I believe education and language is the most important element in modernization. Because if many people even don’t know how to read and write, it is hard for the people to communicate . When most of the people have a common language , they can exchange ideas and help modernize the country.
