Tianjin/ Maps2-Urban Plans of Tianjin since 1956-2020, Tianjin Urban Planning&Design Institute
Tianjin, as a city with critical geographical relation with the capital of China, Beijing, its developments are mostly planned intentionally and those plans give form to the city fabric. When we collected the series of chronological urban planning maps from official Tianjin Urban Planning Institute and put them together, it’s interesting to find how the scale of the maps have been changing and how the city fabric of Tianjin incrementally grow along the Hai River and finally Hai River becomes the spine of the city.
Besides the formal relationship between Hai River and Tianjin, in history the role of Hai River in urban planning is also changing. The river used to be the trade transportation routine, the doorway and fortress to Beijing, then lost its position in rapid expansion after the foundation of new China and finally the river becomes a simple river again now. The government begin to think about the cultural value, natural value, communal value of the river and really tried to construct the river to be the identity of Tianjin. I will focus more on the role that Hai River is returned to public as natural landscape and recover its original identity.
