Expansion of Hanoi in Doi Moi

Master plan of Hanoi before and after Doi Moi

After the independent war against the French, Hanoi became the capital of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam from 1954 – 1976 and eventually the capital of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam after the unity of Vietnam.

Under the assistance of the Soviet Union, there were a master plan for Hanoi’s urban development every five years. From 1950s to 1980s there were around five master plans proposed.

These map has clearly shown a clear difference before and after the Doi Moi economic reform in 1986 on the boundary of the planned area. The city were developed in radiation with the ba Dinh Square as the center. Meanwhile, before Doi Moi, the city boundary were well controlled that the area do not expand significantly for decades. The land opposite of the Song river were remain rural. Even the drawing style of the three master plan were highly similar.

The strategy of urban planning showed significant change in the following map, which were made after Doi Moi. The scale of the city is greatly enhanced that land beyond the Song river were explored.  In 2011 master plan, several satellite urban area can also be noticed on the southern west of the city center. The strategy of a centralized and restricted city was evolving.

  1. I find the various posts rather incoherent as a position about the city. You are simply covering too much ground, and because of it, each aspect is rather superficial. The interest in housing after Doi Moi in your “narrative” postings is possibly the clearest indication of a strong topic. And if it is indeed provocative, why not delve into the 5 years around which this expansion policy occurred? The maps in this post is scanning through so broad a period, it is hard to see the point you are making in relation to Doi Moi. To help, do consider giving the post a stronger title, rather than just giving it the obvious name of “master plans.” Announce the thesis behind your research, and develop this post in tandem with the other posts you have entered, in order to build up a convincing argument about one aspect of the city. Please place the sources of the maps immediately adjacent to each map.
