Merdeka means independent or free in Malay language. Building Merdeka is a documentation of a complete story of the national architectural projects constructed after Malaysia attained independence, including the Parliament House, Stadium Merdeka and Subrang Airport. Each project is explored from historical contexts to processes leading to realization.

The writer also interviewed people involved in these projects including architects, planners and engineers. These sharing allow readers to have a glimpse of the design approach and construction difficulties at that time. These comments are especially useful that some of them have a new perspective on the project they participated after 50 years of operation.
