The Urban Transformation of Jerusalem, 1967-2001, 2001

This paper has examined some aspects of the way Palestinian development in Jerusalem has been administered under the occupation, rather than the conduct of the occupation per se.

The Israeli government has successfully restricted Palestinian development largely to the same areas covered in 1967, and instituted a massive and costly programme of construction of new neighbourhoods for the Israeli Jewish population, and has been successful in ensuring the exclusion of Palestinians from these new neighbourhoods. Meanwhile the standards of housing, local environment, infrastructure and facilities available to Palestinians have suffered. There can be few places on earth where the environmental and living standards of two sectors of the population are in such marked contrast.
