With the intention of glorifying Istanbul, Menderes proposed in the Redevelopment Act the renovation of important historical buildings in Istanbul. Among them is the Valide Mosque, whose nearby areas were demolished to clear out an empty space in front of the Mosque for a wide road passing through and a plaza.
