Seoul’s Historical War Map 1946

Map of Kyongsong or Seoul, U.S. Army Map Service, 1944-1946

A war-purposed map drawn by the U.S. Army in 1946 shows the Han River and Yeouido Island, which was a recently the Japanese airforce military base. The city is mapped with topography, roads, railways, medical institutions, schools, factories, as well as marked with densely built-up areas in yellow and vegetated areas in green.

It is evident that the Han River was not as healthy as it is today, and the size of Yeouido Island proved a drastic change due to flooding in later 1960s that prompted the government to redevelop the island.
