KBS revisiting pre-88Olympic footages – mass media’s portrayal of Jamsil neighborhood and Seoul development preparing for summer Olympic (Pre-88Olympic / 1976-1986)
Korea Broadcasting System (KBS) producer Taewoong Lee revisited the internal footages KBS took during Korea’s preparation for 1988 Summer Olympic. These footages were compiled into a documentary commemorating 30th anniversary of the Seoul Olympic and the achievements and tragedy behind the Olympicslegacy. The documentary, vaguely chronological, paints the Fifth Republic military regime and Seoul’s modernization after the 1981 Baden-Baden bidding. The documentary is composed of episodes of the then-presidential secretary Heo Hwa Pyoung, the “Sanggye-dong Olympic” episode of forced demolitions, controlled media, and interviews about forced demolitions. The documentary was aired in Jeonju International Film Festival where it was described as:
“[Bringing] lightness to the possibly somber mood by the historical weight of each episode with satirical images and brilliant composition. […] Scenes not shown unless it was a blooper, and disclosing entire footages which were deleted for being insignificant, it constantly reminds the audience of the relationship between microhistory and macrohistory. The narrative is constructed by rearranging the past and present of the featuring characters, connecting time, and combining images of various genres such as drama, entertainment, and news. Above all, the attempt of reasoning to face the meaning of the emotions we experience after this time, simply proves the delicacy and boldness of this series.”
