In the Qajar period, the city was contained within a walled fortification and moat. The wall, built by Shah Tahmasp, was reconstructed by Karim Khan Zand. In 1759, Karim Khan commissioned the architect Ostad Gholam Reza Tabrizi to rebuild the 16th century walls of the town. He also built an audience chamber, administration building and private quarters in the Arg.
