Istanbul

“Stepping from the monarchy of Ottoman Empire towards the Turkish republic, Istanbul experienced a growing pace of political reform in the 19th century. Nonetheless, the urban condition of Istanbul was still chaotic, over-crowded, poorly serviced and badly administered… On the other hand, there was a dramatic growth of population at that time due to the loss of territories of the Ottoman Empire. This put great pressure on the existing civil services especially the residential quarters. Hence, the residential fabric of the city was constantly rebuilt in order to accommodate the growth of inhabitants in the city…In the early twentieth century, one of the most notable developments was the emergence of Ottoman Revivalist architecture by two prominent Turkish architects, Vedat and Kemaleddin… In the dying years of the Ottoman Empire, Ottoman Revivalism became the architectural style and enjoyed wide acceptance by the public citizens.”

“Road” to Global City (2007-2013) Part V: From Imperial, National to Global Istanbul

Tse Hoi Yan

In this last session, how cosmopolitan Istanbul has been evolved into a “global city” will be discussed based on the change in its social environment under distinct ideologies in different periods, struggling between the nostalgic Istanbul and the redeveloped Istanbul.   Soul of the city: “hüzün” or “keyif”? “For me it has always been a city of ruins ...

Narrative V: The “Imbalanced” Golden Horn Cultural Valley Project

Wan Hon Lung

With the Golden Horn Cultural Valley Project’s coverage of cultural events and flagship projects, it does resemble a culture-led regeneration approach (Evan, 2005). However, after several of its on-going/ finished projects showed incoherence with the city’s urban policy, it is on the verge of becoming a “culture and regeneration” approach. Viewing the Cultural Valley Project ...

Narrative IV: The Golden Horn Cultural Valley Project – Rehabilitation of Fener-Balat

Wan Hon Lung

The rehabilitation of Fener-Balat is an ongoing urban-renewal sub-project under the Golden Horn Cultural Valley Project.     Fener-Balat was home to the rich Greeks, Jewish middle-class and a small population of Armenian. Fener was given an important international role as a religious centre by the the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate and villas were built by the aristocracy amongst ...

Narrative III: The Golden Horn Cultural Valley Project – Overview

Wan Hon Lung

Ever since the Waterfront Revitalisation Project proposed by Bedrettin Dalan in 1986, Golden Horn has been one of the main foci in Istanbul’s regeneration development. Mayor Dalan envisioned the project, by revitalising the harbour’s environment, to contribute to Istanbul’s global city image.   However, starting from mid-1990s, “Culture” was starting to become an important theme in the ...

“Road” to Global City (2007-2013) Part IV: Contention over The Three Mega Projects

Tse Hoi Yan

Just like the scale of these mega-projects themselves, controversies brought by them were huge as well. Although the AKP government has been enthusiastically promoting the three mega-projects, not everyone treated them as a “blessing”. Mentioned in the preface of the Istanbul Master Plan 2007, striking a balance between human and nature would be one of the ...

Narrative II: Golden Horn – Glory and Downfall

Wan Hon Lung

Golden Horn, situated in the centre of the Cultural Triangle in Istanbul, is a 7.5 km long estuary in Istanbul and it has been functioning as an important bridge, connecting different sections of the city and a paramount element to the social, spacial and economy development in Istanbul’s history. With the geological advantage it has, ...

“Road” to Global City (2007-2013) Part III: The Three Mega Projects in Istanbul
